Alexandrina Council has closed the Goolwa Beach pedestrian access ramp following heavy rain on Thursday 23 November.

On its Facebook page the council says water has undermined the sand from under the ramp resulting in exposed footings and damage.

“The safety of our community is paramount therefore Council has closed the ramp as it is unsafe in its current state.

“We encourage all visitors to use the alternative beach access point from the carpark to enter the beach at this time.”

The pedestrian ramp was part of the $2 million Goolwa Beach Car Park upgrade, completed in September this year.

In Facebook comments the community is questioning the engineering decisions made when designing and constructing the ramp and the money spent, given previous storm water damage in the area.

The council says its staff are working with contractors to rectify the stormwater issue and potential alternative ramp designs to ensure community accessibility requirements are met.

It has apologised for the inconvenience to beachgoers, which is set to continue indefinitely with no date yet advised for the ramp to be reopened for use.
