There’s been a number of tragic accidents involving young drivers across the country in recent weeks.

For parents on the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island, having a young driver in the family can be a worrying time as they get used to driving alone on rural roads in varying weather conditions.

The South Australian Police have posted a number of refresher tips for parents of children who have (or who are about to get) their provisional licences:

Parents, please remember that P Platers:

Are not allowed to use any function on their mobile phone while driving, including hands-free capabilities. Try not to call them if you know that they are driving and be patient if they don’t answer your call immediately. They may be on the road – and doing the right thing by ignoring their phone while driving! (P2s are allowed to use their phone in accordance with the road rules).

Are restricted to 100 km/h, also on roads with higher speed limits. This even applies to interstate roads and if they have a fully licenced driver with them. Keep in mind that road trips may take them longer than fully licenced drivers and plan in more time.

Are not permitted to have any alcohol or drug in their system whilst driving. Period.

Support the idea of using other means of transport if the driver has consumed any of these, even if they feel that they are ok to drive.

Might think they are an inconvenience to relatives or friends if they call to be picked up in case they find themselves unable to drive. Remind them that this is not the case.

Can only have one non-family member in the car if aged 16-20. Exemptions are available for the purpose of employment: https://sapol.info/PLExemptions (does not apply to P2s)

Are not allowed to drive between midnight and 5am if they don’t have a qualified supervising driver with them. Exemptions are permitted for the purposes of work. (does not apply to P2s)

Are inexperienced in driving different types of cars. Consider supervising your child (even if they are on their Ps) if they are not used to the type of vehicle (e.g. manual vs automatic, 4WD vs small hatch back, etc.). Ensure they are comfortable and confident driving the vehicle and ensure they can operate it appropriately.

Cannot drive a High Performance Vehicle (power to weight ration of 130kwh: 1 tonne or more). If one needs to be driven for work, Services SA can assist with obtaining an exemption.
