Finniss MP David Basham will host his next free community forum on cyber safety awareness, in conjunction with South Australia Police (SAPOL) next Tuesday 20 August.
The session, to be held at the Encounter Bay Football Club, aims to help the community stay safe online.
Senior Constables Libby Bruce and Lucas Perry from the Hills Fleurieu Crime Prevention Section will lead the presentation, sharing vital information on how to recognise and avoid scams.
This one-hour session will cover common contact methods used by scammers, red flags to watch for, trending scams, and tips on protecting personal information and passwords.
It will conclude with advice on reporting scams and where to find support.
Mr Basham emphasises the importance of equipping the community with the knowledge needed to prevent cybercrime.
“Every year, scams cost Australians hundreds of millions of dollars and cause severe emotional harm. It’s devastating to see the impact on victims and their families.”
Senior Constable Lucas Perry highlights SAPOL’s commitment to working with the community to reduce crime and fear.
“This session is a chance to learn about online safety, identifying scam methodologies, and implementing prevention strategies,” he says.
“By being smarter with your data and knowing how to spot scams, you can protect yourself from identity theft, financial loss, and other serious consequences.”
The Victor Harbor Library also supports this initiative, by providing digital skills training and technology help sessions.
“We want the community to feel safe and confident online, and there’s no problem with asking for help,” says Victoria MacKirdy, Chief Executive Officer of the City of Victor Harbor.
Mr Basham says his July forum, on preparing to age well, was a great success with more than 180 people attending.
The two-hour session featured insightful speakers, an expo, a morning tea, and a showbag filled with useful resources.
The Cyber Crime Prevention Presentation will run from 10am to 11am. To secure a spot register online or contact the Finniss Electorate Office on 8552 2152.
