Science Week stretches out

Onkaparinga Libraries will extend its Science Week celebrations with a second round of activities and talks on the theme of the marine environment next week.

On Tuesday 25 August investigate life below water between 4pm and 5pm.

The library book group will chat about life below the water, explore the issues faced by oceans and marine life, discuss books and look at what can be done to help oceans and marine life thrive.

The event is suitable for ages 6-12. Book via Eventbrite.

The following day, Wednesday, 26 August, has been set up for Beach Detectives.

From 4pm to 4.30pm kids can join Beach Detectives Sarah and Matt to see what clues about the past they can find on the beach and discover how the shoreline might have looked millions of years ago.

Register via Eventbrite.

From 3.30pm to 4.30pm on Thursday, 27 August the focus will be on oil spills - one of the biggest man-made disasters ever to impact the environment and wildlife.

The effect of oil spills can be devastating, with the clean-up and after-effects sometimes lasting decades.

This activity will simulate an oil spill at home and will need the help of budding scientists, environmentalists, and engineers to help clean it up.

Suitable for ages 8+. Register via Eventbrite.

The final event celebrating marine environments will be Float a Boat on Friday, 28 August from 4pm to 4.30pm.

What makes a boat float or sink? What materials can be used to build a boat?

Register via Eventbrite to collect a free activity pack from 17 August. Suitable for ages 5-8 years
