Sculpture taken from Penneshaw A mother kangaroo with a joey in her pouch has gone missing.

A much-loved community sculpture, featuring a mother kangaroo with a joey in her pouch, has gone missing from the corner of Willson Thomas Road and Middle Terrace, Penneshaw.

Created by respected local artist Phil Baines, the artwork was commissioned by Kangaroo island Council.

The matter has been reported to police and the council is urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity or has information about the sculpture’s whereabouts to contact South Australia Police or Crime Stopperson1800 333 000.

Mayor Michael Pengilly says the incident is deeply disappointing and disrespected both the artist and the wider community.

“This is yet another wanton act that will not be tolerated,” he says. “To remove a piece of public art created by a talented local artist for the enjoyment of the whole community is beyond comprehension.

“It’s not just a loss for Council; it’s a loss for every ratepayer who contributed to the creation of something special for Penneshaw. Acts like this erode community spirit and waste the time, effort and pride that go into making our Island a place people love.”

The sculpture as it should appear.
