The South East Snapper season reopened on Monday and will remain open to the 31st of October unless the recreational catch limit is reached first.
The recreational catch limit is set at 2 133 kilograms to the 30th of June.
If this limit is reached, snapper fishing will be closed to the recreational sector for the remainder of the season.
The following limits also apply until the 30th of June:
- Minimum size of 38 cm
- Personal daily bag limit of two
- Daily boat limit of 6 when three or more people are fishing on board
It is mandatory to report all snapper catches via the Department of Primary Industry’s recreational fishing app SA Fishing or by calling the 24-hour Fishwatch Hotline on 1800 065 522.
Snapper caught from a boat must be reported before leaving your point of landing.
Snapper caught when shore-based fishing must be reported before leaving your fishing location.
Unintentionally caught or undersized Snapper must be immediately returned to the water, which should be done using a release weight. The process of release must not be delayed for any purpose, including the taking of photos.
In September 2019 the South Australian government announced a three-year state-wide ban on the taking of snapper after data showed that the stocks of snapper had declined by 87% in Gulf St Vincent and 23% in Spencer Gulf.
The SE Snapper Season is the only exception to the ban.
