The Wilampa Trail and Jones Journey multi-use trails were officially opened on 9 December by Forestry SA and The District Council of Yankalilla.
Both 7km trails are accessible for walkers, bike riders, horse riders and dog exercisers.
The Trails are located in the Second Valley Forest Reserve and can be accessed from Bedlam Flat Road near the corner of Range Road, Delamere.
The name ‘Wilampa’ comes from Kaurna language meaning black cockatoo with yellow or white feathers.
It recognises the endangered Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo known to inhabit the forest and feed on the seeds of pinecones.
The multi-use loop trail traverses a network of fire tracks through pine plantation and a mixture of hardwood species.
Sections of the trail follow the creek line and passes the Second Valley Forest depot and historic sheep yards.
Jones Journey trail is named after the Jones family, who have a long and illustrious association with the forestry department, with over four generations of service predominately in Second Valley Forest.
The trail includes good views of the surrounding farmland and Fleurieu coast and often features soaring Wedge Tailed Eagles along the way.
It takes around two hours to walk or an hour to ride each 7km trail.
The two new trails make up the first formalised trail network within the Second Valley Forest, providing new recreational opportunities and increased access to the forest.
A new visitor carpark has been established off Bedlam Flat Road, providing parking and a turnaround point for horse floats.
