Willunga Environment Centre will launch its new seed library next Wednesday 2 August.
Any local residents eager to start a garden, or to diversify the one they have, can get a helping hand from the seed library.
‘Borrowers’ can access two packets of seeds for free, along with tips on sowing the seeds and raising seedlings.
Another seed library has also opened this week at Woodcroft library; library cards are not needed to access the free seed packets.
The seed libraries will operate on a one-year trial; if successful they may go on to accept seed donations from the gardens of ‘borrowers’.
Volunteers from Wirra Creek Community Garden and Woodcroft Morphett Vale Neighbourhood Centre have collected the seeds for the libraries.
The varieties and amounts available will vary from season to season, but will include herbs, vegetables, flowers and fruit.
The seed libraries are supported by the City of Onkaparinga through Sustainable Onkaparinga, which will also collaborate to offer garden tours and workshops to help residents grow their own food.
Willunga Environment Centre is calling for more volunteers to help run the seed library, email the centre or drop in for a chat.
More information about the seed libraries at Willunga Environment Centre and at Woodcroft Library can be found at Onkaparinga Now.
