The South Australian State Emergency Service (SASES) is advising communities along the River Murray to prepare for increased flows and flooding over the coming months.

The current flow across the South Australia border is around 79,000 megalitres per day and is forecast to reach over 90,000 megalitres by early December.

Derren Halleday, SASES Chief Of Staff, says water levels in the river will continue to rise over coming months and have already impacted some low-lying communities.

“Unlike the flooding we have seen in New South Wales and Victoria, South Australia is not experiencing severe rainfall events, which has contributed to the flooding in the eastern states,’’ he says.

“The increased flow along the River Murray is a slow moving and natural river event.

“There is significant time for people to prepare for the increased flows and potential flooding.’’

He says people should monitor local councils regarding impacts on local communities such as road closures.

Significant, ongoing rainfall events in Victoria and New South Wales continue to contribute to the increased flows in the River Murray.

“The timing and level at which this water enters the Murray-Darling River system is being constantly monitored and updated,’’ Mr Halleday says.

“There will be different levels of impacts on communities depending on their geographical location along the river.’’

The SASES is advanced in preparing resources, including sandbags, at strategic locations along the river.

People can access information regarding the increased flows by visiting the dedicated River Murray high flows webpage at ses.sa.gov.au.
