CFS crews were called to a shed fire in Goolwa around 3.45pm on Saturday 11 October.
Approximately 50 CFS firefighters, with support from MFS crews, worked to contain the fire to the shed which was full of waste.
Heavy machinery was used to spread out waste piles so crews in breathing apparatus could extinguish the fire. Thanks to their skilled response, firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the shed.
The shed was partially destroyed, with damage estimated in excess of $500,000.
Firefighters will remain on scene into the early hours of the morning to monitor for any smouldering areas. SA Police and SA Ambulance were also on scene supporting crews.
Fire Investigators will attend.
The CFS also issued a smoke alert for the area following the fire, saying smoke from a fire at a waste depot on PORT ELLIOT ROAD, GOOLWA BEACH is heavily impacting PORT ELLIOT RD and the township of GOOLWA and surrounding areas.
