Three shops have been destroyed in a fire that caused over $1M in damage at Mount Compass this morning.

At about 3.30am, police and CFS responded to reports of flames coming from the rear of a block of shops on Victor Harbor Road.

Nine CFS trucks and over 40 crew members attended the fire.

When they arrived the fire was well involved taking hold on several shops within the complex, including a bakery and butcher's shop.

Fire crews worked to bring the blaze under control and were able to prevent the spread of fire to neighbouring businesses.

Damage to the other shops and a home attached to the group is being assessed.

Police Fire Cause Investigators are attending the scene this morning to determine the cause.

CFS crews will remain on the scene to extinguish any hot spots.

The Mount Compass CFS has thanked the staff of the BP station and Pasta Chef for looking after the crews this morning.

Victor Harbor Road was closed in both directions between Tay Road and Arthur Road with diversions in place but has now reopened.

Anyone with information on the fire is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
