Sick palm trees swapped out

The northern end of Victor Harbor’s main street was closed on Wednesday 22 September for removal and replacement of two large palm trees.

Access to Ocean Street was barred for most of the day to facilitate the major operation.

The trees were planted in 2016 as part of Stage One of the City of Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade.

A council spokesperson says the two palm trees were unwell and have been replaced by two healthy trees.

“The removal and replacement was at no additional cost to the City of Victor Harbor, as the work was undertaken as part of the contractor’s palm maintenance and defects liability period under the original construction contract.”

The council has not disclosed what caused the trees’ ill health or whether any other trees in the street are at risk.

Stage Four of the Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade, at the southern end of Ocean Street and the intersection of Albert Place, is due to start in the autumn of 2022.
