Southern Districts ‘A’ Grade has bounced back from a round one loss to defeat Northern Districts at Bice Oval in round two of the SACA Premier Cricket season. Northern Districts skipper Mark Cosgrove won the toss and got his team off to a great start making 63 from 73 balls as the Jets worked their way into a strong position at 2/159. The Stingrays finished the innings well to restrict their opponents to 8/240 from their 50 overs. Tom Hynes, Huw Stone and Trent Riddle all took two wickets while the off-spinners, Sunam Gautam (1/20 from 10) and Tom Joraslafsky (1/31 from 10) kept it very tight with Gautam picking up the all-important wicket of Cosgrove.
The Stingrays response got off to a solid start with skipper Joshua Barrett scoring 26 but at 2/62, the game was in the balance. A couple of good partnerships was what was needed and that’s just what they got, firstly through Brendan McCormack (52) and Chris Russo (51) who put on 83 for the third wicket and then gun recruit Gautam (59 not out from 41 balls) and Russo combined for a 71-run union to get within sight of victory. The target was reached with seven balls to spare and six wickets in hand.
