Southern Districts Women's Cricket Wrap

It was another day of mixed results for the Southern Districts women in the SACA Premier Cricket competition on Sunday with a win to the second grade and a loss to the first grade. The first grade were at home taking on Sturt and after winning the toss decided to bat first. Sadly only skipper Jess O’Reilly (14) reached double figures as the home side were bowled out for just 62 in the 29th over with Extras (17) the top score. Brooke Harris, with her second five-wicket haul of the season, did the damage for Sturt with the excellent figures of 6/14 (7.3). She was well supported by Alex Price (4/14). Sturt were relatively untroubled in the run chase as they brought up the winning runs in the 16th over for the loss of just three wickets with Annie O’Neil top scoring with 25. Kelly Armstrong continued her excellent season for the Stingrays as she snared 3/13 (5.1). Armstrong now has 29 wickets in all competitions this season.

It was a far different story for the Stingrays second grade as they banked their seventh win of the season to consolidate top spot on the ladder with a 45-run victory over Sturt at Price Memorial Oval. The visitors batted first with the innings set up by a patient innings of 48 (113 balls) from Cara Allen. Solid contributions from Rachael Greenshields (13), Kendall Howell (12) and Jess Modistach (12) lifted Southern Districts to 6/112 from their 40 overs. Melanie Smith (2/10) and Brigitte McGuire (2/26) were the multiple wicket takers for the Blues. Sturt were never in the hunt during their run chase with extras (21) the top score and only Angela Mourtzios (12 not out) reaching double figures. Five Stingrays bowlers took wickets with Howell (4/10) and Keely Stone (3/12) doing most of the damage. Stone now has 22 wickets in all competitions for 2019/20.

Next Sunday (23/2) the second grade takes on Kensington at Bice Oval while the first grade has the bye.
