The SA Whale Centre has reported that the Southern Right whale mother and calf pair that have been around since the end of last week seems to be happy to call Encounter Bay home!
Each day since Friday last week, the cow and calf pair seem to be very happy swimming along the coastline from Port Elliot to Victor Harbor and back again. Great places to look for them (where you can get a higher vantage point) are Chiton Rocks, Freeman's Knob Lookout and Oliver's Reef. They have also come as far as Granite Island and the Causeway area too.
The team have also received sighting reports of a single Southern Right Whale that has been seen around the Bluff and Wright Island side of Encounter Bay in recent days. Couple that with some Humpback whales travelling through and you've got yourselves a pretty good excuse to come down South and whale watch at the moment!!
According to the centre, it is still incredibly important to maintain social distancing when out whale watching this season and to keep washing or sanitising your hands whenever possible. The centre encourages everyone to get out and about to have a look for whales but urges the public to do it safely and respectfully.
Keep your eyes peeled and if you do see a whale, remember to call the SA Whale Centre on 08 8551 0750, send them a message on their Facebook page or enter a report online at www.sawhalecentre.com.au.
