Southern Women have been crowned country champions after winning the SA Country Football Championships in Whyalla last weekend. The Southern team won their two qualifying matches to make it through to the Grand Final against South East Women. The decider was played at Bennett Oval on Sunday morning with Southern winning 7.2 (44) to 3.5 (23). Casie Coombe, Tamara Page and Rachel Searle kicked two goals each for Southern. Melissa Anderson, Kalani Bates, Coombe, Tegan Cross and Madison Bennett were named in the best players.

Not surprisingly the Southern squad cleaned up in the awards with seven players making the team of the championships. They were Katrice Turner, Amy Vitkunas, Kalani Bates, Tess Huxtable, Rachael Searle, Jodie Hunt and Madison Bennett. Bennett was also named as player of the championships, while Tamara Page was the leading goalkicker. Wade Phillips and Mark Rix were named as the coaches.

The Southern Men had mixed results at the carnival with one win and two losses, with their win coming on Saturday afternoon by five points against Northern. Sam Tharaldsen (Flagstaff Hill) and Luke Mitton (McLaren) were named in the team of the championships, with Mitton also being awarded the best under 21 player. South East won the title with a thrilling one-point win against Central.
