Alexandrina Council is seeking community views about a proposal to extend the 50km/h speed limit past homes along the entrance into the western side of Clayton Bay.

If approved by the state government, the proposal would affect around 900m in the 80km/h section of Alexandrina Drive from Finniss-Clayton Road, some 100m past the Clayton Street and Pearce Road intersection, to the existing 50km/h zone.

“The community in Clayton Bay has raised multiple concerns about the safety of the 80km/h speed zone that runs through to the western side of Clayton Bay along Alexandrina Road,” says Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes.

“Many residents have informed council that they believe 80km/h is too fast in this area and should be reduced to 50km/h.

“Council cannot change speed limits without approval from the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) so we are now consulting with the Clayton Bay community to see if they would like us to formally submit an application to the state government to lower speeds to 50km/h.

“We should note that the final decision rests with DIT and even if there is overwhelming community support for the speed limit reduction, the Department may not endorse the request.”

For further information about the proposal, including a map outlining the 50km/h extension and the feedback form, visit the council’s My Say website

Submissions can be made until 5pm on Friday 25 August.
