Construction began last month on redevelopment of the Senior Citizens Building at 6 Parker Avenue.
The redevelopment follows discussions between the Alexandrina Council, Strathalbyn Senior Citizens Club and the Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre about co-locating both community groups to create a collaborative community centre.
The clubroom and neighbourhood centre project will provide a dedicated place for the Strathalbyn community to deliver a range of community development programs to support local and surrounding residents.
The upgrade will increase the building’s functionality, including a full renovation of the existing kitchen and development of an accessible toilet; as well as a new extension to provide dedicated office and meeting spaces.
The Senior Citizens Club has been operating in Strathalbyn to support senior community members since 1966.
Since 1977 it has been located in a council-owned building in Parker Avenue, Strathalbyn.
The Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre is a not-for-profit community organisation established in 2014 that provides information, and social and community programs and services to the residents of the Strathalbyn district.
Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes says he is pleased that the construction phase of the project is progressing.
“The redevelopment of the Strathalbyn Senior Citizens Building will provide two of our prominent community groups the base and facilities they need to provide their much needed services to the Strathalbyn community well into the future.
“Both groups are pivotal to the region and for many years have facilitated social interaction, access to programs and much needed support to our people.
Alexandrina Council anticipates the redevelopment will be completed by July.
