Strath sound shell-shock

Alexandrina Council’s plan for a sound shell in the Strathalbyn Memorial Gardens has been pulled following community feedback.

The structure was to be built on the northern side of the Angas River, allowing audiences to enjoy events and performances from the southern side.

It was to host events and festivals throughout the year, instead of temporary stages, and serving as a shelter available to the public in between events.

Construction costs had been estimated at more than half a million dollars, with the council allocating $250,000 towards the project in its 2024-25 budget.

It had intended to seek grant funding to cover the remaining costs.

A community consultation process held in April and May found more than 80 per cent of feedback was against the location, design and council funding of the sound shell.

This included concerns about potential flooding of the site.

The strong negative response saw council administration recommend dropping the project from the next budget, which was endorsed at the council meeting on Monday 17 June.
