Strath wants a ticket to ride

The Strath Neighbourhood Centre (SNC) is coordinating a campaign for a local community bus service.

SNC manager Malcolm Sutcliffe says there is no public transport or taxi service in the town.

He told ABC radio this week that the closest services are in Mount Barker and not everyone can get there.

“We need a simple localised service to allow people to get to the shops and have the opportunity to connect with the rest of the community.”

There is currently only one supermarket in Strathalbyn, limiting shopping choices for people unable to drive.

Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes says lack of local transport and other infrastructure is a hot topic for the region.

He says the council is looking at option to run a small community bus service and has been lobbying the government for funding.

If an Uber or taxi service was to be licenced for Strathalbyn it would lose its rural status for vehicle registration, which would increase the cost for residents who drive.

Mr Parkes told ABC radio the state government has granted approval for a new Foodland supermarket just outside the town, which should increase competition and choice.

SNC will conduct a survey on the local public transport issue, starting Monday 4 March, and has asked as many people as possible to get involved and show support.

SNC is located on Parker Avenue in Strathalbyn; for more information on programs and activities go to the website or Facebook page, or call 0431 337 044.
