Strathalbyn on the board in Great Southern Football

Strathalbyn won their first game of the season following a nail-biting four-point win against Willunga during round two action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) at Strathalbyn yesterday. The Roosters prevailed 6.14 (50) to 6.10 (46). Lachlan Fox kicked two goals for ‘Strath’, while Jaxon Hams was a standout for the Demons with four majors. The Roosters were best served by Cooper Machin, Jack Kelsh, Brock Keding, Marc Elliott, Jake Stafford and Jacob Wright. For Willunga, Hams, Harrison Mills, Ryan Collier, Tom Messenger, Hugo Hoeck and Sam Tregenza were named their best players. 


Encounter Bay remained undefeated after a thrilling four-point win at home against Langhorne Creek. The Bays led by 18 points at the last change, before the Hawks kicked three goals to one in the last term before going down 8.7 (55) to 7.9 (51). Kyron Pepper (3) and Tyson Neale (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Encounter Bay, while their best players were Tyler Baldock, Ben Davis, Marcus Lippett, Callum Tonkin, Hamish Tonkin and Lachlan Costello. Best for Langhorne Creek were Angus Cole, Henry Bruce, Matt Dominish, Jaxon Bennett, Josh Towk and Tom Derham. Jackson Dalitz and Matt Uebergang kicked two goals for the Hawks.


Yankalilla notched their first win of 2024 with a huge 140-point win at home against Goolwa/Port Elliot. The Tigers led by 61 points at halftime, before kicking a further 14 goals to two in the second half to win 24.18 (162) to 3.4 (22). Yankalilla had 10 different goalkickers with Joe Tyllis leading the way with five majors, while Logan Payne kicked two goals for the Magpies. ‘Yank’ had many good players including Bailey Gaskin, Tyllis, Chris Clark, Oliver Carpenter, Travis Bartlett and Michael Thompson. Best for the Magpies included Finn Hayden, Ryan Carnelly and Jesse Bates.


Victor Harbor made it two-from-two with a 22-point win against reigning premier McLaren Districts. The ‘Roos led at every change to win 10.12 (72) to 7.8 (50). Victor Harbor co-captain Sam Overall kicked three goals, while Darcy Brown kicked two goals for the Eagles. Dylan Kleinig, Benjamin Heaslip, Overall, Jackson Elmes, Zachary Dowling and Matthew Wiese were named best for Victor Harbor. Best for McLaren Districts included Luke Mitton, Ashley Goodieson, Sam Venning, Jackson Daniels and Codey Ellison.


Myponga-Sellicks remained undefeated after two rounds after defeating Mt Compass by 17 points yesterday. The Mudlarks led by just four points at halftime, before a five goal to two third term saw them turn for home with a handy 23-point lead. Mt Compass won the last quarter but it wasn’t enough as Myponga-Sellicks won 10.13 (73) to 7.14 (56). Darren Shillabeer was the standout forward on the field with six majors for the Mudlarks. Ziggy Vitkunas kicked three goals for the Bulldogs. Dylan Lang, Ben Kennedy, Darren Shillabeer, John Butcher, Jayden Heinze and Ryan Kelly were best for the winners, while for Mt Compass, Ziggy Vitkunas, Leo Turner, William Zimmermann, Rilee Endersby and Brent Creek were named in the best players.
