Strathalbyn Panthers Under 14's go down in a tight one to Hahndorf

After multiple missed weeks due to weather and low player numbers, perfect summer weather greeted the players this week. Strath started at bat, showing tremendous growth in discipline, swinging (mainly) for strikes, and having a good go at hitting to get the ball in play. Eva Eglitis made the dig’s only safe hit. Eva took to the pitching stripe (to catcher Jack Walters) and in just two pitches had made two putouts to first base. The rest of the inning wasn’t so smooth, with Hahndorf ending with seven runs, mainly on walks.

Strathalbyn continued their aggressive batting and base running in the second inning with Jack,  Eva and Nate Spinks (filling in from U10 modball in his first game up in U14) all making it home.

Lindsay Butler took over pitching to Poppy Groom in the second inning and worked hard to get the ball in the zone, a couple hits to Hahndorf amongst the walks saw them score another seven runs.

The third and final dig saw Strath hit their stride, with seven out of eight players making it on base and home. In reply with the bat, Hahndorf made a run before two quick outs. Strath couldn’t quite get the third out, despite some great attempts at steals around the diamond. Hahndorf scored two more runs before time was called with a 17-13 victory.

The team will now take a mid-season break, with Christmas and some country championships seeing an extended hiatus until February. Anyone interested in trying softball are encouraged to reach out via our facebook page and come out to a January training session.
