Strathalbyn senior Softballers return to the diamond

In their first game for this season, Strathalbyn’s ‘C’ grade side took on Echunga on a warm and muggy day. Strath were up to bat first and with walks and great base running brought home three runs before Echunga’s fielders took advantage of Strath’s runners lack of knowledge for the game when instead of holding on a fly ball they ran to the next base. Echunga’s shortstop Karen Boswell took the catch and quickly threw to Jasmine Hartmamm at second who in turn threw to Jodie Karayiannis at first for all three outs in a triple play.

Echunga came in to bat and had safe hits to multiple players including two basers to Hayley Brown and Bree Elliott which helped bring in six runs. Strath’s pitcher Bec Sims did a great job in the conditions and first time catcher Heidi Samuel did well to support her. Strath worked hard in the field while playing one short with third baser Stacey Jamieson fielding cleanly and throwing to Jackie Marsh on first, a catch taken at centrefield by Jo Falkland and shortstop Jess Rumble fielding and throwing to Annabel McGregor for the out at second.

Strath’s second turn at bat included some hits but they were unable to convert any runs with Echunga making two outs at first and Taylor Hogan taking a catch at centrefield. Echunga were also held scoreless in their second batting dig with Strath also making two outs at first and a catch taken by Rumble at shortstop.

Strath really wanted to hit the ball in the third and had a couple of hits including one to Hannah Jones but had two K2’s and an out at first sending them from the diamond without adding to the score. Echunga added the full ten runs allowed with multiple safe hits and a two and three baser from Hogan helping get runners home. Sims did a great job in following through after a pitch taking two catches for the innings.

Strath came in for their fourth turn at bat and had safe hits to Jamieson, Rumble, Falkland and Marsh and a two baser to McGregor which helped bring in three runs to add to the tally. Echunga was fielding well with an out at home, an out at first and a put out at second base to end the innings and the game. Echunga came out on top with 16 runs to Strathalbyn 6.
