Six fire trucks carrying approximately 24 firefighters responded to a Triple O call to attend a structure fire at 2.15pm on Sunday 22 December at the Kangaroo Island Resource Recovery Centre located six kilometres west of Kingscote.
On arrival volunteers found a shed containing cardboard recycling material on fire.
Using defensive firefighting techniques, CFS volunteers restricted the fire from spreading to the centre’s processing plant and nearby grassland.
The shed where the fire started has been destroyed and it is anticipated damage will exceed $40,000.
The fire was contained but volunteer firefighters remained on scene for several hours to mop up and monitor for further flare ups.
The fire’s cause is unknown but will be investigated.
