Summer is always a busy time for RSPCA South Australia, but this year the rush began earlier than expected. Just over a week ago, the organisation took in 50 kelpies from a single property, an extraordinary surrender that has pushed their animal care teams to the limit.
These dogs, a mix of adults and puppies, arrived needing immediate attention. Some required medical treatment, while others needed help to overcome behavioural challenges. Each dog has already undergone a thorough veterinary check, and before they are ready for adoption, they will be desexed, vaccinated, treated for parasites, and microchipped. It’s a process that comes with significant costs, all covered by community donations.
“For many of these dogs, this is their first real chance at a fresh start,” says RSPCA SA CEO Marcus Gehrig. “It’s a journey that involves not just medical care, but also time and patience to help them become confident and adoptable.”
The timing of this intake aligns with the launch of RSPCA’s national Guardian Angel Christmas Appeal, a campaign that raises vital funds to support the care of thousands of animals during the hectic summer season. With more than 2,000 animals expected to come through RSPCA SA’s doors over the coming months, the appeal is a lifeline for the organisation and the creatures it supports.
“Summer is always the busiest time for us,” Mr. Gehrig explained. “Becoming a Guardian Angel allows people to directly support animals in need, ensuring they receive everything required to recover and find loving homes.”
Last year, RSPCA SA cared for nearly 6,000 animals, rehoming 3,284. This year, they are already caring for 750 animals, nearly half of whom are housed at the O’Halloran Hill animal care centre. With demand continuing to rise, the organisation is calling on the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island community to lend a hand.
The Guardian Angel Christmas Appeal offers a simple but powerful way to make a difference. Donors can sponsor an animal, directly contributing to its medical treatment, food, shelter, and rehabilitation. Every donation helps ensure that animals like the surrendered kelpies receive the care they deserve.
For locals, it’s an opportunity to come together and make this festive season a time of hope and renewal. Whether it’s through fostering, adopting, or donating, every contribution makes a tangible impact.
This summer, RSPCA SA invites the community to be part of something special. Together, we can ensure every animal has the chance to feel safe, loved, and ready to start a new chapter in their lives. To become a Guardian Angel or learn more, visit www.rspcaguardianangel.com.au.
