The Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority (FRWA) has released its summer collection schedule, detailing a significant change to its waste collection plans for the busy school holiday period.
General waste is usually collected weekly, instead of fortnightly, over the summer, but this year the yellow recycling and green organics collections will be doubled instead.
The six extra weekly collections of Recycling and Green bins (in eligible townships) will begin the week of 19 December 2022 and finish the week of 27 January 2023.
Alexandrina Council says the change aims to encourage residents to recycle more material and divert more waste from landfill.
“The Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island Councils are already leading that state in recycling with 60 per cent of kerbside waste collected recycled.
“The extra collection of recycling and organics will see nearly 75 per cent of material collected recycled.”
The change follows a two-year investigation into the best way to provide more capacity and reduce the environmental impact over the summer peak visitor period.
FRWA says it recognises that Christmas and New Year are a busy time for many residents, with food and packaging waste increasing significantly.
“Providing weekly Recycling and Green bin collections will allow us to provide residents with significantly more capacity to recycle.
“General Waste to Landfill bins will continue to be collected fortnightly, including the collection of exceptional circumstances bins that are provided by councils to support large families, those with babies in nappies or with medical waste needs.”
Further information and collection calendars can be found on the FRWA website.
