Monday 16 December will see the start of the summer weekly recycling and FOGO bin collection service across the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island.

Weekly collection of the yellow lid recycling and green waste bins will continue through the peak holiday season to the end of January. Collection of the blue lid general waste bin will remain fortnightly as usual.

During Christmas week, all collections that would normally happen on Wednesday 25, Thursday 26 and Friday 27 December will take place one day later than usual.

Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority (FRWA) says that while the summer and festive season can increase the region’s household waste, bin audits reveal that most of the increased waste in the general bin should go in the green FOGO or yellow recycling bins.

This includes food waste such as prawn heads, meat bones, cheese, greasy compostable packaging or home composting in the FOGO bin and  gift packaging, cartons and bottles in the recycling bin.

FRWA encourages the community to divert as much household waste from landfill as possible. 

It says it has contacted local holiday rental agencies outlining extra paid collection service options available, as the fortnightly general waste collection designed for residents may not be enough for these businesses during this peak time.

“Holiday home and business operators/managers are responsible for the extra waste created by their clients in generating income from their ventures. Waste management is an operating expense for these businesses.

“Likewise, residents should not need to bear these extra costs in their rates for people/businesses running holiday properties for income.”

The authority suggests that anyone who notices a holiday rental with waste issues should contact the owners or rental agency directly.

FRWA is a collaborative agency run across the local government areas of Alexandrina Council, Kangaroo Island Council, City of Victor Harbor and District Council of Yankalilla.
