Today is national R U OK? Day, when everyone is encouraged to reach out and connect with people around them and make sure they are doing OK. It follows on from international suicide prevention day on September 10 and is intended to give people a way to start a conversation with anyone who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs.
Many people may be reluctant to start the conversation because they don’t know what to do or say if the answer to the question is no. But you don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener.
R U OK? Day is about making everyone to feel confident they know the signs someone might need support by listening to what they’re saying, seeing what they’re doing or knowing what’s going on in their life.
Whenever you notice a change, no matter how small, trust your gut and start an R U OK? conversation using these four steps:
1. Ask R U OK?
2. Listen
3. Encourage action
4. Check in
Fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion are important in helping people to feel OK. Taking the time to ask "Are you OK?" and listening can help people struggling with life feel connected long before they even think about suicide. It all comes down to regular, face-to-face, meaningful conversations about life, and asking, “Are you OK?” today is a great place to start.
