After COVID-related cancellation and delays, Willunga’s annual Almond Blossom Festival is set to put smiles back on the faces of everyone who’s been missing out on family-friendly fun.

On the weekend of November 13 and 14, Willunga Recreation Park will come alive with sideshow alley attractions, camel and pony rides, local food and drink, entertainment, market  stalls, fireworks and more.

“It’s been a long time coming and we can’t wait to welcome visitors from all over the state to this Fleurieu family favourite,” event coordinator Heather Williams says.

The festival usually attracts about 8000 people over the two days, with organisers hoping to break records in 2021 thanks to the warmer November weather – not to mention the lack of festivals and events during COVID.

“Like a lot of community events, we had to skip the festival in 2020. Then postpone this year due to our short lockdown in July. It will be great to see all the exhibitors and entertainers  returning to delight us all,” Heather says.

“With border lockdowns and interstate holidays on the backburner, it’s a perfect chance to spend a weekend on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula.”

Highlights this year include the Pivotal Dance Troupe from Seaford, showcasing their aerial, silk and trapeze classes on the oval, Cosplay for a Cause, local musicians on stage in the large  marquee, a display of vintage and classic cars by Fleurieu enthusiasts, local beers and wine, and the annual Almond Cracking Competition.

“We’re also looking forward to the almond-inspired cookery competition. Entries will be on display all weekend in the CWA rooms. You can also grab tea and scones from the Willunga Evening Branch members while you’re checking out the baked goods.”

“Each year, we feature a new Festival Cake for you to try at home. This year’s, from Kendall  Hogg, uses ricotta cheese and lemon to delight the tastebuds.”

“This year’s festival promises to be a great weekend for the whole family – but don’t just take our word for it, we’ve had a lot of local kids tell us they can’t wait!” Heather says.
