The Federal Budget and Mayo

The Member for Mayo, Rebekah Sharkie, says last night's Federal Budget deserves a C+.

She said while there had been some important announcements for Mayo and South Australia, there were also significant failures.

Ms Sharkie says she is concerned about the lack of action on social housing and rental assistance, support for the aged care workforce, climate change, renewable energy, regional infrastructure and a federal integrity commission.

She welcomes the short-term cut to fuel excise but is frustrated that no funds were allocated to explore the possibility of a rail corridor in the hills or a rail extension to Aldinga.

Specific funding announcements made last night:

  • $60 million for the Stage 2 of South Eastern Freeway Managed Motorways
  • $15.4 million for round two of the Agricultural Shows Development Program with funding available for repairs, upgrades or building show infrastructure.
  • $9.6 million for a South Eastern Freeway Safety Upgrade
  • $2.5 million for McLaren Vale Treated Water Storage
  • $1.3 million for a Festivals Australia program to support art activities at festivals in regional and remote areas
  • A minimum of $1.1 million to provide assistance to transport construction-grade bushfire salvage logs from Kangaroo Island to mainland Australia
  • $900,000 for Activated Safety Signing on the South Eastern Freeway
  • $500,000 for the McLaren Vale Irrigation Water Security Business Case.

The remainder of Ms Sharkie’s report card on the budget can be found online.
