Next time you visit Myponga Reservoir, as well as the running shoes and a picnic rug, you might want to throw in the rod and reel.
In the first six months of public access to Myponga Reservoir, the site has seen around 10,000 visitors through the gates.
And now, planning is under way for opening up the reservoir for shore-based fishing by the end of the year.
Primary Industries and Regions South Australia is investigating appropriate fish species to stock Myponga Reservoir with. It is expected that rod and reel fishing will be permitted using bait or artificial lures, however burley or other fish attractants (liquid, spray or scented) will not be allowed.
In the lead up to fishing being introduced at Myponga, people will also be able to apply for a fishing permit via reservoirs.sa.gov.au
According to SA Water, the potential for on-water access, such as by kayak, is still being assessed.
Myponga Reservoir was opened for recreational access on 14 April of this year. Around 200 avid trail runners joined South Australian Olympic marathon runner Jessica Trengove for a social run around the reserve’s tracks.
The reservoir has become a popular place for walking, running and cycling, with a 3.3km looped track on the southern side of the reservoir. Visitors can also enjoy picnicking, and opportunities to enjoy water and bushland views and spot more than 120 bird species and wildlife such as kangaroos.
Dogs are not allowed to enter reservoir reserves in South Australia as they can carry harmful organisms that can easily contaminate the water and present a risk to the safety of the drinking water. Dogs also pose a threat to the local native animals.
Myponga Reservoir’s capacity is 27.6 gigalitres (there are one billion litres in a gigalitre), which is enough to fill more than 55 Adelaide Ovals with water
Built between 1958 and 1962, it is one of 16 reservoirs across the state that help supply water to more than 1.7 million South Australians.
Visit reservoirs.sa.gov.au for more information on conditions of access and what activities are available at SA Water reservoirs.
