Yankalilla won their second game of the season after defeating Goolwa/Port Elliot by 36 points during round six action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) at Goolwa yesterday. The Tigers win was set up after an excellent first quarter saw them lead by 45 points at quarter time. The game was quite even from then on as Yankalilla eventually won 13.9 (87) to 7.9 (51). Patrick Chay and Thaddeus Puautjimi kicked four goals each for the Tigers, while their best players included Jack Fitzgerald, Joel Kay, Chay, Puautjimi, Bailey Gaskin and Jesse Fitzgerald. Best for the Magpies were Jett Reid, Riley Davis, Jye Bottroff, Ken Angus, Levi Baillie and Jesse Bates.
Encounter Bay consolidated their spot in the top-five with an 11-point win against reigning premier Myponga-Sellicks yesterday. The Mudlarks led by 12 points at quarter time, before Encounter Bay hit back with four unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a handy 17-point lead into halftime. The second half was an even affair before Encounter Bay finished 12.11 (83) to 11.6 (72) winners. Ben Davis, Mitch Davis, Andrew Fyfe, Jayden White and Ryan Pearsons all kicked two goals for the Bays, while Darren Shillabeer kicked three majors for the Mudlarks. Marcus Lippett, Fyfe, Callum Tonkin, Mitchell Davis, White and Tyler McCreanor were named best for the Bays, while for the Mudlarks, their best were Mitchell Wilkins, Connor Sampson, Jake Spinks, Hayden Sampson, Nicholas Hutchings and Luke Whitford.
Willunga won their third game in a row after a comprehensive 104-point win at Langhorne Creek. After a tight first quarter, the Demons took over, kicking 18 goals to three after quarter time to win 21.14 (140) to 5.6 (36). Dylan Draper kicked seven goals in a best-on-ground performance for Willunga, while Daniel Bass kicked five majors. Jackson Dalitz kicked two goals for Langhorne Creek. Joining Draper in the best players for Willunga were Nathan Stark, Brad Haskett, Sam Renney, Scott Brown and Brett Miegel. Best for the Hawks included Tom Derham, Henry Bruce, Matt Dominish, Mitchell Cleggett and Cameron Bates.
Victor Harbor remained undefeated following their 102-point victory against Mt Compass. ‘Victor’ won every quarter on their way to a 19.17 (131) to 4.5 (29) victory. Ben Heaslip continued his excellent season with four goals in a best-on-ground display. Jaidan Kappler (4), Daniel Stock (3), Harry Vincent (2) and Bryce Gibbs (2) were the other multiple goalkickers for the ‘Roos. Joining Heaslip in the best players for Victor Harbor included Kappler, Sam Overall, Mitchell Brook, Dylan Kleinig and Matthew Wiese. Best players for the Bulldogs were Hugh Daniell, Nathan Schulz, Tom Vitkunas, Will Zimmermann, Brandon Mckenzie and Rilee Endersby.
McLaren Districts consolidated their spot in the top-three spot with a big 156-point victory over Strathalbyn. The Eagles led by 83 points at halftime, before kicking a further 12 goals to one in the second half to win 29.9 (183) to 4.3 (27). Josh Vandermeer was the standout forward with nine goals for McLaren Districts, while Archie Rutt kicked four. Declan Gladigau kicked two majors for the Roosters. Best players for the Eagles were Tom Fenoughty, Codey Ellison, Vandermeer, Luke Mitton, Rutt and Henry Mathews. Strathalbyn was best served by Fletcher Duffield, Gladigau, Reuben Stutley, Declan Grant, Oliver O'Driscoll and James Scott.
