Tigers rejoice after first win of 2023 in Great Southern Football

Yankalilla won their first game of 2023 with a 14-point win over Goolwa/Port Elliot at Yankalilla during round 10 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. The Tigers led at every change before winning 6.10 (46) to 4.8 (32). Jack Fitzgerald kicked three goals for the Tigers, while their best players were James Hargreaves, Liam Gerber, Joel Kay, Luke Bartlett and Tyler Athanasos. 

NB: No goalkickers or best players were available for Goolwa/Port Elliot at the time of publication.


Willunga moved inside the top-three after defeating fellow finals aspirant Victor Harbor by 36 points on Saturday. The Demons led at every change to win 10.6 (66) to 3.12 (30). Daniel Lee kicked four goals in a best-on-ground performance for Willunga, while Danny Juckers kicked three. Jackson Elmes kicked two goals for ‘Victor’. Joining Lee in the best players for Willunga were Jack Redden, Hugo Hoeck, Job Colwell and Sam Tregenza. Victor Harbor were best served by skipper Jesse McKinnon, Kane Cooper, Dylan Kleinig, Zac Dowling and Mitch Brook.


Myponga-Sellicks consolidated their position in the top-three after a come-from-behind 16-point win at Strathalbyn. ‘Strath’ held a handy 15-point lead at three-quarter time, before the Mudlarks kicked six goals to one in the last term to win 11.13 (79) to 9.7 (61). Daniel Trevena, Jake Spinks, Jayden Scott, Harry Cock and Jaxon Sampson all kicked two goals for Myponga-Sellicks, while Ben Simounds was a standout for the Roosters with six majors. Best players for the Mudlarks included Luke Whitford, Sampson, Ryan Kelly, Cock and Tom Carroll. Strathalbyn’s best players were Jacob Wright, Simounds, Daniel Pegler, Mark Tucker and Marc Elliott.


Reigning premier McLaren Districts made it 30 wins on the trot with a hard-fought 20-point win against Mount Compass at McLaren Vale. An upset appeared on the cards as ‘Compass’ led by three points at halftime, but the Eagles responded well to the challenge, kicking seven goals to four in the second half, to win 12.15 (87) to 10.7 (67). Joel Chahla kicked three goals for McLaren Districts, as did Ziggy Vitkunas and Tom Pinyon for Mount Compass. Tarak Redigolo was adjudged as best player for the Eagles and he was well supported by Codey Ellison, Matthew Merrett, Billy Chahla and Sam Lawrie. The Bulldogs’ best included Ziggy Vitkunas, Will Zimmermann, Jordan Hooper, Pinyon and Klaus Simons. 


Encounter Bay won their third game of the season following a 27-point win against Langhorne Creek. The Bays led at every change before running out winners 14.6 (90) to 10.3 (63). Dan Jelinek kicked four goals for Encounter Bay, while Mitch Cleggett kicked three majors for the Hawks. Callum Tonkin, Jack Crispin, Cohen Pettitt, Pat Taggart and Jelinek were named as best players for the Bays. Best for Langhorne Creek included Caleb Howell, Matt Dominish, Tom Derham, Peter Reichelt and Shannon Jones.
