Tighter leash laws for dogs on beaches will take effect from 3 December in the City of Victor Harbor following a review of by-laws.
The council adopted several by-law changes at its October meeting, including those pertaining to dogs and must now determine the locations they apply to.
It is proposing that dogs must be on a leash 24/7 within the Hindmarsh River Estuary, Inman River Estuary and Wright Island to protect biodiversity.
Dogs must continue to be on leash at all foreshore areas between 10am and 8pm during daylight savings time, from October to March.
The council is also proposing a new off-leash dog area at Petrel Cove beach, in Encounter Bay.
Hooded Plover breeding sites have already been determined as on-leash areas and dogs must be under effective control at all locations, all the time.
Community response on social media has questioned the selection of Petrel Cove as an off-leash beach, due to its lack of accessibility. A petition apposing application of the on-leash rule to Hayborough Beach has been started on Change.org.
Other by-laws adopted will affect locations approved for a range of activities, including launching and retrieving boats, using e-scooters and segways, operating floodlights and flying model aircraft.
The community has the opportunity to comment on the proposals, with a the consultation period closing at 5pm on Tuesday 21 November.
Full details of the changes, the proposed locations and how to provide feedback are on the council website.
