Time to tackle tuna on the south coastTyson and Team Bonus took out top prize in the 2019 Coast2Coast Tuna Tournament.

There is still time to enter the sixth annual Coast2Coast Tuna Tournament, the family-friendly fishing competition.

The event kicks off on Friday 7 February with registration and briefing from 2pm at the Victor Harbor Harness Racing Club.

The winners will be announced at the club at 4pm on Sunday 8 February after two days of full-on fishing.

Everyone is welcome to the weigh-ins, held until 7pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday, and to the awards presentation.

Husband and wife team Steve and Sarah Powell run the event, with support from family and friends.

Sarah says there are usually around 75 boats and 230 fishers involved.

“The largest tuna caught to-date weighed in, gutted and gilled, at 34.1kg, at the first event in 2015,” she says.

“Last year’s grand champ caught a tuna weighing in at 22.6kg.”

A professional filletter ensures there is no wastage and the event meets the National Environmental Assessment of Tournament Fishing to minimise impacts on fish stocks and the environment.

There are more than 30 winning categories, including prizes for largest tuna caught by male, female, child, and teams for boats over six metres and under six metres.

The 2020 event has support from 38 sponsors, with Club Marine the major sponsor.

Sarah says they are pleased the tournament has the endorsement of Victor Harbor council, with Mayor Moira Jenkins a regular competitor.

Tournament entry costs $40 per person, with camping available at $10 per person per night.

The bar will be open and food available at the Victor Harbor Harness Racing Club at 15 Lipizzaner Drive, Hindmarsh Valley.
