Tree changes tracked in Onkaparinga

City of Onkaparinga is asking the community to share its views on the local tree canopy.

Seven years ago the council set targets to increase its urban tree canopy and green cover.

With a goal of planting 100,000 trees, it has since mapped hot spots that would benefit from planting, as well as tree numbers and canopy size across the urban area.

The council says it has already planted more than 56,000 trees in streets, parks and reserves.

It also lobbies the state government to improve planning laws and regulations and make it more difficult to clear trees.

Community programs such as Adopt a Tree, and Tree of the Month aim to boost awareness of the importance of trees and promote practical measures to increase tree numbers.

In April the council will hold first tree giveaway event and launch an initiative to support communities to plant more trees.

A community survey on the tree canopy can be completed online until 7 April.
