Update: Annual Sid James triathlon to close roads

With high temperatures forecast for this Saturday 9 March, the Sid James Victor Harbor Kids' triathlon and 5km Turkey Handicap events have been rescheduled to the morning.

This means local road closures around Warland Reserve and the Esplanade have been amended to 10am to 12pm. This affects:

  • Flinders Parade from Coral Street to the Esplanade.
  • The Esplanade from Island Street to Flinders Parade.
  • Albert Place from The Esplanade to Railway Terrace.

Temporary road closures for Sunday 10 March remain as originally scheduled from 6.30am to 1.30pm:

  • Flinders Parade from Coral Street to Esplanade.
  • Esplanade from Flinders Parade to Inman Street.
  • Albert Place from Railway Terrace to Esplanade.
  • Island Street from Esplanade to Newland Street.
  • Newland Street from Island Street to Inman Street.
  • King Street from Esplanade to Victoria Street.
  • Victoria Street from Kings Street to Burke Street.
  • Burke Street from Victoria Street to Crozier Road.
  • Crozier Road from Burke Street to Canterbury Road.
  • Canterbury Road from Crozier Road to Greenhills Road.
  • Greenhills Road from Canterbury Road to Sawpit Road.
  • Cartright Road, Brook Road, Hawke Road, Sinkinson Road, Panorama Drive, Harvey Avenue, Jackson Road and Imperial Court from Greenhills Road.

Organisers are expecting around 200 competitors to Saturday’s events and up to 800 on Sunday.

The multisport event was founded by the late Sid James, a former triathlete, and is now named in his honour.

Business Victor Harbor says the event brings an influx of visitors to the town, who are encouraged to eat and shop with local businesses.

Last year’s event caused major traffic disruption, with Victor Harbor Mayor Moira Jenkins apologising to Encounter Bay residents and businesses for the lengthy delays and promising to work with organisers to ensure it doesn't happen again.

The City of Victor Harbor has warned that resident access to and from properties will be for emergencies only.

It will be facilitated by traffic controllers on the day and drivers should expect delays.

Full details of the event can be found on the organisers’ website.
