Police have recovered a wallet and other personal items during the search for a man who went missing in waters near Granite Island early Tuesday morning.
A bag containing the man’s wallet and keys were found washed up at Goolwa Beach about 3kms up from the Murray Mouth. Police were alerted to the find yesterday by a member of the public and retrieved the items along with a broom and drums.
The discovery comes after police received a call from a local commercial fisherman about 6.30am on Wednesday 23 September, who had located a number of items of debris washed ashore several kilometres south-east from the Murray Mouth.
The debris located appears consistent with items from the missing boat and has been taken to Goolwa Police Station.
Patrols and the police helicopter (PolAir) conducted a coastal search where both discoveries were made. SAPOL’s fixed wing aircraft has been deployed again and will focus on searching open waters in the same areas.
Just after 5am on Tuesday 22 September, police received a call from a man reporting his boat was taking on water near Granite Island. The boat is the same vessel that was the subject of an extensive search earlier this month south of Port Lincoln.
Police received confirmed reports the vessel was seen anchored off Granite Island around 3pm Monday (21 September).
Sea Rescue volunteers conducted a search for several hours Tuesday morning but were forced to return to shore as weather conditions worsened. PolAir also carried out a search along the Coorong and SAPOL's fixed wing aircraft assisted in the search.
Approximately 500 square kilometres of coastal area has been searched so far.
Anyone who has had contact with the man or saw the vessel after 3pm Tuesday, is urged to call the Police Assistance Line immediately on 131 444.
The search for the missing man and his vessel has restarted this morning.
