City of Onkaparinga has called for public comment on its concept plan for the streetscape upgrade to Main Road McLaren Vale.

The proposed upgrade would form part of a tourism hub in the McLaren Vale township and focuses on a section of the street that features historic buildings and tourist focused businesses.

The council says its vision was developed in collaboration with the community and visitors and includes outdoor dining spaces; public art; more greenery and decorative lighting.

It will build arbours along the street as shade refuges, plant more street trees, establish garden beds and install more public seating.

A public art element of the streetscape plan features 21 pillars with lighting at the top of each, designed by Sam Songailo and Hatch Studio.

It aims to attract attention and encourage people to linger in the street.

The council says it has been working closely with the McLaren Vale Business and Tourism Association in developing the concept plan.

Onkaparinga Council has budgeted approximately $650k for the upgrade, with construction expected to start in September.

The concept plan is available to view online, with consultation open until Monday 6 May.
