Nine trees along Cadell Street have been spray-painted with red crosses and the council says the action has been taken by vandals and not by the council or any other legitimate entity, according to its enquiries.
“Vandalism of public assets, including trees, is an offence under the Local Government Act, and offenders can be prosecuted.
“Council is removing the markings using a citrus and eucalyptus oil blend that will not harm the trees. We will also look into this matter further.”
The council has called on anyone who has information that may help determine who carried out the vandalism to make contact by email or by calling 8555 7000.
It says the future of the street trees along Cadell Street is being reviewed and community consultation will be conducted on in the coming months.
“We will be asking for feedback regarding a progressive tree replacement program for the street.”
