November marks the 100thl anniversary of the iconic Victa Cinema, a cornerstone of Victor Harbor's entertainment history.
Several celebrations will commemorate the landmark occasion, including a major opening night gala on Friday 24 November.
City of Victor Harbor Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins says almost every Fleurieu Peninsula local and many South Australians would have memories associated with the Victa Cinema.
“Victa Cinema has been a beacon of culture and entertainment in our community,” she says.
“This centennial celebration isn't just about marking a milestone; it's about honouring the memories, stories, and experiences that have been shared within these walls over the past 100 years.”
“I’m very excited, particularly for the opening night gala. We’re closing Ocean Street from cars, from Coral Street to McLaren Lane, for a huge community celebration with music and dancing.
“I encourage cinema enthusiasts, local residents and history aficionados to drop by on the Friday evening!”
The Opening Night Gala, on Friday 24 November, will have the theme of The Great Gatsby and the community is invited to get dressed for a fun night of 1920s frivolity, with vintage car displays, music and dancing on the street from 6pm.
This will be followed by a special screening of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby at 7pm.
Celebrate a century of film exhibition, from Saturday 25 November to Sunday 10 December, with a series of matinee screenings featuring a top grossing film from each decade. Buy individual tickets or a 10-film pass.
On Thursday 30 November, Chris Burns from Heritage South Australia will give a talk tracing the history of the Victa Cinema.
He will introduce many characters who have been part of the building’s story at the event, which starts at 7pm.
Sunday 3 December will see a reunion of Victa Cinema Staff from 10am, with a casual get-together of cinema staff of all generations.
