Victor Harbor big winners in Great Southern Football

Victor Harbor remained undefeated and on top of the ladder after a crushing 328-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot yesterday. The ‘Roos kicked 11 goals in the first quarter, 10 goals in the second term, and 12 goals in the third quarter, before slamming on 17 majors in the last stanza to win 50.29 (329) to 0.1 (1). Victor Harbor had 12 goalkickers with Harry Vincent kicking 11 goals in a best-on-ground performance. He was ably supported by Sam Basham (10), Michael Ross (8) and Daniel Stock (5), while Ben Heaslip, Jesse McKinnon and Zac Dowling were also in the best players. Best for Goolwa/Port Elliot were Kaiden Wilton, Ryan Carnelly, Logan Payne, Pat Dowdell and Dale Cuthbert.


Myponga-Sellicks are also undefeated after beating Willunga by 56 points. It leaves Willunga in the unusual position of not posting a win after the first month of the season. The Mudlarks won every quarter on their way to a 15.17 (107) to 7.9 (51) victory. Darren Shillabeer and Jake Spinks kicked four goals apiece for Myponga-Sellicks, while Ryan Sherry and Brad Haskett kicked two goals each for Willunga. Ryan Kelly, Connor Sampson, Ben Kennedy, Levi Proude, Jayden Heinze and Luke Whitford were named best for the Mudlarks, while the Demons were best served by Harrison Mills, Daniel Bass, Haskett, Hugo Hoeck, Sherry and Zachary Dumesny.


Langhorne Creek consolidated their spot in the top-five with a 30-point win at home against Yankalilla. A big upset looked a distinct possibility at the last change as the home side clung to a two-point lead, but the Hawks steadied in the last quarter, kicking four answered goals, to win 11.15 (81) to 7.9 (51). Darcy Clifford, in his first game this season for the Hawks after playing for Adelaide in the SANFL, kicked four goals. Joel Kay, Scott Biddle and Karison Kantilla all kicked two majors for Yankalilla. Tom Derham, Henry Bruce, Caleb Howell, Jarrod Kellock, Josh Towk and Adam Towk were named best for the Hawks. Yankalilla’s best were Jack Fitzgerald, Bailey Gaskin, Oliver Carpenter, Tyler Athanasos, William Hogben and Ayden Duke.


Encounter Bay won their third game for the season after defeating Mount Compass in a low-scoring affair. The Bays led by two points at the last change and kicked two goals to one in the last quarter to win 4.7 (31) to 3.7 (25). Tom Pinyon was the only multiple goalkicker on the field with two goals for ‘Compass'. Callum Tonkin, Ben Davis, James Bradford, Tyler Baldock, Cory Gamble and Tate Walker were best for Encounter Bay who were celebrating the 200th games for Hamish Tonkin and Eli Horrocks. Best for Mount Compass were Brent Creek, Will Zimmermann, Ziggy Vitkunas, Klaus Simons, Shannon Jones and Tom Vitkunas.


Reigning premier McLaren Districts moved inside the top-five after a comfortable 65-point win against Strathalbyn yesterday. The Eagles won every quarter to win 17.21 (123) to 9.4 (58). Luke Mitton, Brett Ellis and Jett Holberton all kicked three goals for the reigning premier, while gun full-forward Ben Simounds kicked six goals for the Roosters, taking him to 455 majors at ‘Strath’. Best players for McLaren Districts were Ellis, Daniel Marr, Mitton, Holberton, Sam Venning and Sam Lawrie. Best for Strathalbyn included Marc Elliott, Simounds and Thomas Welk.
