Victor hop into the top-five in Great Southern Football

Victor Harbor won their fourth game in a row, and in the process moved up to fourth spot on the ladder, after defeating Strathalbyn by 66 points during round 13 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. The ‘Roos led by 19 points at halftime, before kicking 10 goals to three in the second half to win 16.18 (114) to 7.6 (48). Sam Basham and Jackson Elmes starred for ‘Victor’ with five goals each, while Ben Simounds kicked three majors for Strathalbyn. Best players for Victor Harbor included Jesse McKinnon, Elmes, Zac Dowling, Rhys Bartram and Dylan Kleinig. The Roosters’ best included Cooper Machin, Adam Clark and Simounds.


Myponga/Sellicks consolidated their spot in the top-three with a come-from-behind 32-point win against Encounter Bay at Myponga. The Bays got off to a great start to lead by 27 points at quarter time, and they still led by 17 points at halftime, before the Mudlarks came out firing in the third quarter. The home side kicked nine goals to one for the term to turn for home with a comfortable 35-point lead. The Bays won the last quarter but the damage had been done as the home side won 16.16 (112) to 13.2 (80). Jayden Scott (5), Ben Kennedy (3) and Matthew Flintham (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Mudlarks, while Tyson Neale (4), Jake Tarca (3) and Patrick McInerney (2) led the way for Encounter Bay. Ben Kennedy was named best for the Mudlarks and he was well supported by Thomas Carroll, Scott, Cooper Gilbert and Levi Proude. Neale was best for the Bays with Marcus Lippett, Fraser Tonkin, Cohen Pettitt and Lachlan Williams also among their best players.


Langhorne Creek kept their finals hopes alive with a convincing 58-point win against Mount Compass. The Hawks led at every change before winning 14.12 (96) to 5.8 (38). Mitch Cleggett and Caleb Howell kicked four goals each for Langhorne Creek, while Ziggy Vitkunas kicked two majors for ‘Compass’. Best for the triumphant Hawks were Troy Blackwell, Howell, Coby Helyar, Darcy Clifford and Scott Tonkin. The Bulldogs’ best players included Corey Grove, Tom Vitkunas and Klaus Simons. 


Willunga had a percentage boosting 163-point victory against Yankalilla to consolidate their spot in the top-three with five rounds to go. The Demons only led by 14 points at quarter time, but they completely took over after the break, kicking 26 goals to three to win 31.17 (203) to 6.4 (40). The Demons had an amazing 14 goalkickers including Darcy Scott (6), Sam Renney (5) and Jake Standfield (4). Joe Tyllis led the way for Yankalilla with three goals. Scott, Renney, Brad Haskett, Danny Juckers, Tyson Hoffmann and Harrison Mills were best for the reigning premier, while the Tigers were served best by Louis Ripon, Ayden Duke and Harry Abbott.


McLaren Eagles continued their undefeated season with a 95-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot at Goolwa. The Eagles led throughout before winning 23.18 (156) to 10.1 (61). McLaren had 11 different goalkickers with Jordan Mutton and Matthew Merrett kicking four goals each. Trent Griffen slotted three majors for the Magpies. The Eagles had plenty of good players including Daniel Marr, Alex Moyle, Joel Vandeleur, Brett Ellis and Codey Ellison. Best for Goolwa/Port Elliot were Jesse Bates, Jaid Cooper, Ryan Carnelly, Logan Payne and Kosta Dekoning.
