The City of Victor Harbor has again called for public vigilance to help combat a spate of recent vandalism in the town.

This follows a deliberately lit fire in Kleinig’s Hill public toilets on the evening of Saturday 24 August - one of several incidents of vandalism of public property in the last few months.

Chief Executive Officer Victoria MacKirdy says Saturday’s arson was attended by SAPOL and the Metropolitan Fire Service.

“We are grateful to emergency services for their quick action ,which ensured damage was contained,” she says.

“However, it is very disappointing to witness an increase in the destruction of public amenities around Victor Harbor.

“Vandalism is a costly exercise for councils to rectify, not to mention frustrating as it is completely unnecessary and diverts resources away from our core services.

“The Victor Harbor community is a safe and respectful one. These acts of vandalism do not reflect our values nor belong within our town.”

In May this year another toilet block was the target of damage, with a toilet smashed by a brick.

The council says resources have also been allocated to graffiti removal.

Saturday’s fire means toilet hardware needs replacing and a major clean-up by council staff.

Ms MacKirdy says residents can support the council to reduce vandalism in Victor Harbor by being on the lookout for antisocial activity.

“If you witness vandalism as it is taking place, please report it immediately to SAPOL by calling 131 444,” she said.

“If you come across vandalised infrastructure, please contact Council on 8551 0500.”
