Volunteers needed to help cancer patients

The Fleurieu Cancer Support Foundation needs more volunteers to help drive cancer patients who live on the south coast to medical appointments and treatment in Adelaide.

Secretary of the foundation Heather Burns says while many of the current volunteers are retirees they also have younger drivers who offer their time around part time employment.

“We like to work on a pool of about 36 drivers,” she says.

There are other jobs apart from driving that need to be done and the foundation is also looking for volunteers who are happy to work in the office doing rostering and reception duties.

The foundation has three vehicles. Two are based at Victor Harbor and one at Port Elliot. Patients are picked up from their homes and taken to their appointments in Adelaide and then returned home. They are funded through donations, sponsorship and fundraising activities.

All drivers are tested by a driving instructor before starting work and all volunteers will need to obtain a police clearance.

If you are able to donate some time to help local cancer patients you can contact Heather on 0416 225 982.
