The Fleurieu has a chance to gain a new shellfish reef, with two of the three proposed sites in this region.
The plan is a joint initiative of The Nature Conservancy and the South Australian Department of Environment and Water, following successful establishment of a similar reef off the coast of Ardrossan in 2018.
Research has highlighted the importance of shellfish reef habitats to the quality of the marine environment, fish breeding and water quality and to deliver recreational and economic opportunities.
The two potential Fleurieu sites are at O’Sullivan Beach, between Christies Beach and the boat ramp; and Port Noarlunga, within the Encounter Marine Park sanctuary zone. The third possible site is at Glenelg.
The reef would have a two-hectare footprint at a depth of around five to 12 metres and the state government expects to complete it by late 2020.
