Want to run the Rapid Bay campsite? The Rapid Bay Campsite

The District Council of Yankalilla is asking for expressions of interest from individuals or businesses interested in managing the Rapid Bay Campground.

The Tender documents are available online and electronic submissions close at 2pm, 30 July.

The three-year agreement with the current operator is due to expire at the end of September.

In May council received a letter from a law firm on behalf of a local property owner in Cygnet Place in Rapid Bay, requesting that the popular camping site be closed down.

In response users and other Fleurieu locals started a petition to lobby the council to ensure the camping site remained open. More than 8700 people have signed the petition so far.

The campground was closed for several months last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic but reopened in September.

Rapid Bay is popular with divers and fishers.

It is also the site of a disused limestone quarry.

Quarry operations began in 1938 by then owner BHP. The quarry was sold to Adelaide Brighton Cement in 1981 who stopped mining at the site in 1988.

There have been calls in recent years for Adelaide Brighton Cement to remediate and beautify the abandoned buildings and quarry site.
