BirdLife Australia and Green Adelaide have joined forces to offer two free workshops and field trips about Hooded Plovers and how to help them survive.
Hooded Plovers are Australia’s most threatened beach-nesting bird and are listed as vulnerable.
According to Landscape South Australia there are less than 800 in South Australia and recent surveys on the Fleurieu found only 29 breeding pairs.
Coastal development and human activity are the major threats to Hooded Plovers. Nesting at the base of the sand dunes during spring and summer, they will abandon eggs and chicks when persistently disturbed by vehicles, dogs, humans and foxes.
On the Fleurieu volunteers known as Hoodie Helpers work to monitor, protect and raise awareness in the community about the birds.
The first workshop, Introduction to Hooded Plovers, will be held on Saturday 29 August at the Maslin Beach Community Hall from 9.30am.
The second, Helping Hooded Plovers, will be at Moana Pioneers Memorial Hall on Sunday, 20 September from 9.30am.
Each workshop will be followed by a 30-minute beach trip at 11.30am.
Register to attend one or both via Eventbrite, or by calling 0457 333 177. RSVP for Introduction to Hooded Plovers by 24 August and for Helping Hooded Plovers by 14 September.
