The City of Victor Harbor has commissioned South Australian artist Nicole Black to create a large-scale mural on the Telstra Exchange Building on Ocean Street.
Public consultation on what to do with the ugly brick wall was conducted during November 2019 and led the council to call for expressions of interest, which closed on 24 January.
A panel of councillors, staff and industry professionals assessed the expressions of interest received, and sought concept designs from a number of artist groups.
The design brief is to reflect the character of Victor Harbor and Nicole’s inspiration is holiday memories, the colours of the region and the cycles of nature.
A council statement says the panel was excited by Nicole’s design and is confident it will provide Victor Harbor with a contemporary and original work that engages viewers with colour, spatial play and an element of surprise.
She has previously completed murals at Coromandel Primary School, Westfield West Lakes and Torrens University in Melbourne.
The mural will form the final piece of the puzzle that is the upgrade of the northern end of the main street of Victor Harbor.
Nicole started work on Monday 6 April and council will chart her progress in regular updates on its website and Facebook page.
The local Telstra and Bunnings stores have supported the mural project.
