The Western Districts Football Club (“The Saints'') were meant to celebrate their 50th anniversary last weekend. Instead they have had to postpone their celebrations until next year after the devastating bushfires that hit Kangaroo Island last summer destroyed the Western Districts Community Club. Club President, Tony Nolan, said the club had hoped to recognise the 50-year anniversary by erecting a Marquee for the event but sadly the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to those plans as well.
The club affectionately known as “The Club in the Scrub”, have an enviable record in the Kangaroo Island Football League (KIFL) since joining the competition in 1970 with 13 ‘A’ grade flags, including a 15-point victory over Parndana in the 2019 decider last September. It was also a great year for the Netball club who snared an incredible five of the seven premierships on offer! Unfortunately the club's joy was short lived with the catastrophic bushfires followed by the COVID-19 outbreak which has deeply affected the community.
Hopefully the club will get to defend it's 2019 titles but no decision has been made as yet on what form, if any, the 2020 season will take. But as Mr. Nolan says, “we'll keep on marching”!
